Exposure is not ownership.
Bitcoin can be held two ways: through an institution, or by you. A fund, an exchange balance, a spot ETF, all work the same way underneath: you hold exposure to bitcoin's price, and you are at the mercy of the institution's policies, fees, business hours, and solvency. You hold the exposure. Someone else owns the bitcoin. Here is what owning it changes.
- Your bitcoin, under your control, in private.
- No recurring fee on the bitcoin.
- No reliance on anyone else.
- Your family can reach it on their own terms, on a plan you set in advance.
- An IOU, not private. An institution owns it.
- A fee on your position, every year.
- Reliant on one company’s security and decisions.
- Your family waits on paperwork and process to receive it.
For a short hold, a fund or an exchange may be fine.
For a position you intend to keep and pass on, the difference compounds.
